Gateway’s AMD-packing LT3100 netbook unleashed

Last time we saw Gateway’s 11.6-inch LT3100 it was buried in a heap of other Acer / eMachines netbook reveals , including the Timeline . Now it’s gone official, and the big surprise here is that the self-proclaimed netbook is sporting a processor from AMD — you know, the company who has largely shunned netbooks while later looking to differentiate with the “ultra-portable” Athlon Neo processor. The 1.2GHz Athlon 64 L110 is what’s packed in here, in addition to integrated ATI Radeon X1270 graphic

4 Stars Small form factor, high build quality, small keyboard, no bluetooth
I purchased the black S10 from an importer in NY, and it’s been upgraded with a 2 gig RAM stick (recognizes a total of 2 gigs for the system) and a 120gb 5400 HDD.
That being said, I’ll not spend any time talking about the speed of this little netbook. I’ve worked on the Acer Aspire One and tooled around on the first generation from Asus as well. I went with the Ideapad for a couple of reasons.
1. The high quality of Lenovos in general. I have not been disappointed. Whereas the first gen Asus were flimsy and many of the others at least feel flimsy (MSI Wind), this one feels to me to be a good sturdy laptop – not much flex, the hinge for the screen feels solid, the keyboard, while not as good as the classic thinkpad, is easy to type on (though small, at 85% of normal size as opposed to 92% for some competitors).
2. The screen size. At 10.2″, it’s large enough for me to comfortably work on. I’ve seen some people pining for an 11″ netbook, and that would certainly be nice, but what I can tell you is that I’m much more comfortable working on this 10.2″ than the 8.9″ that I’ve used.
3. The webcam works well. My fiance lives abroad, and having this little guy for skype has made a big difference for us. The webcam is a feature that doesn’t make the S10 stand out against other netbooks, but it was something I was looking for in a cheap laptop.
4. The trackpad is configurable. I love being able to assign different areas of the track pad to different functions. Having the top left and right corners as “back” and “forward” in the browser and the bottom right as “right click” have made this a lot easier.
A few gripes:
1. The keyboard – I’ve already mentioned it, but it is small, and takes some getting used to.
2. There is currently no bluetooth, though apparently some reviewers have received units with it.
3. The mouse buttons on the trackpad are particularly loud. I’ve fixed this by assigning the bottom right of the pad to “right click,” but that may not work for you.
Basically, the S10 is a solidly built, speedy (especially with the cheap RAM upgrade), sleek little machine that I’ve been very happy with.
5 Stars Best netbook around
Just got my S10 3 days ago and it is exactly what I was looking for in a netbook. Granted 512mb is not enough memory, it is SO easy to upgrade the Lenovo that it is not really an issue. Given the feature set and build quality the slight negatives do NOT outweigh the numerous positives! The 10″ screen and express card slot make the S10 standout from the crowd.
1 Star NO CD/DVD Drive?!!
These mini’s would be awesome if they could just add a basic cd/dvd drive to them. I can’t understnd why they can’t. What a pain in the a@@ to have to buy and tote around a external drive just to watch movies or listen to cd’s. Stupid! I’ve never seen a computer without a cd/dvd drive EVER!
5 Stars Great Look, Excellent notebook
I ordered the white s10 on Lenovo website when they had 15% off in August 08. But only white, black and red were available.
Waited long time (about 1 month) to receive this one. It was light, small but big enough screen for web surfing and other light task windows programs.
The battery life lasts about 3 hours with the “super power save” mode that come with the S10 and it is only 3 cell battery. They could have used 6 cell battery for longer operating hours.
Better looking than HP, ACER, MSI and Eee PC
The 8.9″ Acer aspire one is the same size but a little thicker than S10 and costs the same even though aspire one have bigger memory, hard drive and 6 cell battery. The 8.9″ screen on aspire one makes it thicker edges next the LCD screen when compares with S10, this is the main reason I don’t like aspire one.
Pros:
Stylish, light weight, build-in mic and webcam,
no other junk software installed (very clean),
80GB hard drive.
Bright screen, 10.2″ not 8.9″ or 7″. Great Vaule.
Thin screen edge.
Fast boot up.
Cons:
3 cell battery, hard drive is partitioned to 2 sections.
Update:
I put 1×2 GB Crucial PC2-5300 on Ideapad S10, it showed 2GB in Windows XP, not 2.5 GB.
Only 1 slot available in S10 and so maximum memory is 2GB. This means the on board 512 MB is not used by the system.
Also tried putting 1 GB memory and it showd 1.5 GB total in XP.

3 Stars Not tall enough to include the mini computer 6V battery
I bought this item specifically for my new Mini-Acer with the 6V battery. The computer will only fit into the SlipSuit WITHOUT the battery attached and then there is no place to carry the battery; it will not fit into the outside zippered compartment. The outside compartment is very small and tight; I haven’t tried to put the a/c adapter in it, but I don’t believe it will fit there either. Other than these inconveniences, the case is great for carrying and protecting the computer and several flash drives.
